Etymology. √gam 'to go', cognate with English 'come' (Old English cuman, from Proto-Germanic *kwem-), Latin 'venio' (from Proto-Italic *gwem-), and Greek 'bainō' (from Proto-Indo-European *gʷem- 'to step, go'). The nasal infix -n- seen in Latin 'venio' does not appear in the Pali present stem, which shows instead the thematic vowel -a-.
