Etymology. Root √van (to desire, to wish); cognate with Sanskrit vāñchati (desires), vāṇa (desire). The nominal sense 'forest' is less clearly connected—possibly borrowed or phonetically assimilated to a different root. The verb preserves Indo-European *wen- (to strive, to seek), seen in Latin venari (to hunt) and English win.
