Etymology. From sati (memory, recollection, mindfulness) + -mant (possessive suffix meaning 'having'). Sati derives from √smṛ (remember), cognate with Sanskrit smṛti, English 'smart' (originally keen, sharp), and Latin 'memor' (mindful). The suffix -mant (Sanskrit -mat) forms adjectives meaning 'possessed of' or 'characterized by', as in guṇavant 'virtuous' (from guṇa 'quality').
