Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *reup- 'to break, tear', whence also Latin rupia 'mange, scab' and Old Norse rjúfa 'to break'. The sense evolved from 'broken/fragmentary' to 'form, shape' (that which is formed by breaking matter into discrete pieces) and thence to 'material appearance, body'. Sanskrit rūpa and Greek rhein 'to flow' (from the sense of matter's formlessness) are sometimes compared, but less certainly.
