masc nom sg of patta (noun); masc nom sg of patta (adj); masc nom sg of patta (pp)
Etymology. Past participle of pappoti (√pad, 'fall, reach'), from Indo-European *pet- 'fly, fall'. Related to Latin petere 'seek, aim at', English feather, and Sanskrit patati 'falls'. The noun 'bowl' (originally 'what is reached for, vessel') derives from the same root through the sense of a receptacle one reaches toward.
