Etymology. pa- (forward, forth) + √kāsa (shine, appear). The root kāsa (to shine, be visible) is cognate with Sanskrit kāśa- and Greek kaíō (to burn, shine). The prefix pa- gives the sense of shining forth or becoming visible — literally, causing brightness to step forward. Related to English case (in the sense of appearance, outer layer) through the same Indo-European root.
