Etymology. From the demonstrative stem *i- (Sanskrit idam 'this'), with the ablative singular suffix -smā. The stem *i- is cognate with English 'it' and Latin 'is' (that one), all descended from Indo-European *i- (demonstrative). The ablative ending -smā (Sanskrit -smāt) reflects Proto-Indo-European *-sme with locative-ablative force.
