Etymology. Root bhū- (Sanskrit bhavati, English "be", Greek phuein "grow"; also cognate with Latin fui "I was" and English "be" itself). The Pali present stem hoti comes from Indo-European *bhew- "to grow, become, be". The imperative hohi preserves the thematic vowel -o- of the present stem with the imperative ending -hi (2nd sg).
