  An ancient cardinal number, frozen in form, deriving from PIE *dwō(h). No longer productively decomposable; the root itself encodes the plurality.

Etymology. From Proto-Indo-European *dwō(h), whence also Sanskrit dvi, Greek dúo, Latin duo, English two, German zwei. The Pali form dvi (and its plural duve) preserves the old neuter dual inflection, repurposed as a collective plural in later usage.
