Etymology. From √div 'to shine' (Sanskrit div, cognate with Latin dīves 'rich', originally 'shining' or 'gleaming'). The sense develops from the visual brightness of the gods and their realms. Related to dyaus 'sky, heaven' in Sanskrit and Greek Zeus, all from the Indo-European root *dyew- 'to shine, sky'.
