Etymology. From Indo-European *dhē- 'to place, set, establish' (Sanskrit dharma 'law, duty, what is established'). The root appears in English theme, thesis; Latin faciō 'do' (from *dhe-). The noun abstracts the sense of 'what is established' into 'natural law, doctrine, reality'. In Buddhist usage, dhamma encompasses both cosmic law and the Buddha's teaching—what stands firm as truth.
