Etymology. assu (tears) from √as- 'to be'; cognate with Sanskrit asru, Greek dakru (from earlier *daksu-), Latin lacrima, English tear. The root is ancient and appears across Indo-European languages. The optative forms derive from the athematic present assa, from √bhū- 'to be', with the optative ending -u.
