Etymology. abhī + √nand. The prefix abhi- (toward and over, bearing down) combines with √nand (to be glad, to enjoy). The concrete sense of bearing down toward something becomes the figurative sense of turning one's emotional attention fully toward it—delighting in, approving of. The root nand has cognates in Sanskrit nandati and Latin narrāre (to tell, report), both rooted in Indo-European *ned- (to enjoy, to nod assent).
